The Owl Book Fold: One of My Most Detailed Creations
If there’s one thing I truly take pride in, it’s creating book folds with incredible detail — and this owl design is easily one of my favourites to work on.
Why Owls Make Perfect Book Folds
Owls and books have always shared a certain magic together. Perhaps it’s the symbolism — wisdom, mystery, and a quiet sense of knowledge — that makes them such a beloved subject for book folding. This particular design, featuring an owl perched gracefully on a log, was both a challenge and a joy to create. The end result turned out exactly as I had imagined — full of depth, texture, and character.

The book itself uses an inverted (debossed) cut and fold technique, finished with black cardstock to enhance the definition and contrast of the owl’s silhouette. This approach makes every curve and feather stand out beautifully against the pages.

The Book Behind the Fold
From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to create this as a large-scale piece to capture as much fine detail as possible. That ambition came with a few hurdles — it actually took me four attempts to find the perfect book! The first three books I tried unfortunately showed the printed text through the folds after the 180 technique, which distracted from the image. Finally, I landed on a hardback copy of Breaking Dawn, which worked wonderfully. While a few faint words can still be seen in places, they’re subtle enough not to detract from the overall design.
