Rolling with the Squad: Pokémon #007 – Squirtle
Hi everyone!
I am absolutely thrilled to unveil the latest addition to my 151 Pokémon Book Folding Challenge: #007, the adorable Water-type, Squirtle!
When I first started this massive project, I had a clear vision for exactly how I wanted to execute certain Pokémon. I knew I saved this number for something special, so I was super excited to finally get to my favorite little turtle. Naturally, it had to be the definitive incarnation: the Squirtle Squad.
Finding Inspiration: Episode 12
I really love the image of the squad peeking into the pit that they dug specifically to catch Ash, way back in episode 12, “Here Comes the Squirtle Squad.” It is such an iconic, menacing, and hilarious moment of early Pokémon lore. I thought that circular composition, with multiple faces staring down, translated into a fantastic piece of art.

The Build: The Monochrome Decision
To get that intense, line drawing definition, I used a standard cut and fold technique with a 180 fold.
The key to this design was maximizing the contrast. I didn’t think this piece needed any colouring at all; monochrome is the definitive look for this classic moment. To achieve that powerful black-on-white pop, I inserted black cardstock inserts into the folds. The result is clean, sharp, and truly striking.

Timeline and Presentation
This was actually a relatively simple book to make despite its complex look. However, it has taken me a little while to complete, simply because I have had so many other creative projects on the go at the same time.
Once again, I have played around using some AI tools to create a cool, thematic image to show off the finished book. I know AI can be a controversial subject, but I am really enjoying experimenting to get these unique and interesting results that make my books pop on screen. I think the slightly edgy, graphic result is perfect for these mischievous little troublemakers.

Despite the initial timeline delays, the Squirtle Squad is complete and ready to roll onto the shelf next to Bulbasaur and Charmander!
On to the next challenge: #008, Wartortle!
Something really stunning! You are an artist!
